Melasma

Those dark patches that appear on your skin may be related to melasma, but this is not always the case.

Even so there are preventative, active and counteractive measures to address potential melasma problems in the best ways possible.

A frequent and common concern among many women, especially those pregnant, is the unannounced appearance of patches of dark discoloration on certain areas of the body.

These are considered by some as Melasma or also another common term, pregnancy mask.

This can also affect not just women who are expecting, but any woman undergoing hormonal therapy or using contraceptives in either oral or patch form.

These irregular and dark patches are usually apparent on the face, and in particular, on the forehead, upper lip, nose and cheek areas.

Incidents of melasma can ironically also affect men that are either native American or even those of European origin.

Genetic disposition may play a significant part in the scenerario but there is no way to be completely certain which culture is more predisposed to melasma effects either facially or bodily.

Causes of Melasma

Medically, there is presently no clearly defined cause for the occurrence of Melasma, although there are some factors that may likely trigger the effects as follow:

  • Genetic Profile
  • Hormonal Changes
  • Extended Sun Exposure
  • Birth Control Useage
  • Specific Medications

Preventing Melasma

An important first step to prevent the incidence of Melasma to to ensure that the skin is properly protected by applying a sunscreen agent that provides protection across both the UVA and UVB parts of the spectrum.

A mineral based sunscreen containing titanium and perhaps zinc should be used and applied to all areas subject to sun exposure.

Even though it may be considered unnecessary at some time of the year to do this, it is likely one of the best ways to prevent skin from potential sun damage in any way. Another suggestion is that a hat and proper UV protective sunglasses are also worn.

Melasma Treatments

In some instances related to pregnancy, it may only be necessary to wait until proper hormonal balance is acheived after giving birth. This can result in a restoration of proper skin conditions and cause any indications of melasma to disappear.

All that may be required is patience and time in the best manner possible. Melasma is regrettably considered to be a mere cosmetic concern by most physicians and is not related to any particular medical disorder.

If visual evidence of melasma continues, it may be necessary or desirable to engage more efffective treatment methods, and there are several to choose from.

Fractional skin resurfacing is one of the most effective laser treatments in aesthetic dermatology. It improves the condition of the skin by breaking down the pigmentation at a deeper dermal level.

Minimal discomfort is reported with this treatment. Depending on the severity of the condition 3-5 treatments are likely necessary and a few additional ones recommended.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is also very effective in the treatment of Melasma. It is a simple process with virtually no down time. A broad band of light is pulsed into the skin which is absorbed by the melanin in the skin and converted into heat.

The heat causes the melanin to break down and the pigment is eliminated by normal metabolic processes in a very short period of time.

Microdermabrasion treatments and clinical chemical skin peels can also help to address issues related to melasma concerns.

Although there is no quick and simple solution with respect to Melasma skin problems, there are effective options for treatments.

The Laser Genesis Skin Care Clinic provides solutions for Melasma and offers the best treatments available. Contact us for a FREE and confidential introductory session.
